Bacterial dehalogenation of halogenated alkanes and fatty acids

The ability of microorganisms present in crude sewage, and of specific bacterial strains isolated from sewage and soil samples, to dehalogenate selected chlorinated aliphatic hydrocarbons was investigated in the laboratory. Although sewage samples capable of dehalogenating 1,9-dichlorononane, and other halogenated compounds were found, organisms capable of utilizing this compound as a sole carbon source could not be isolated. An enzyme preparation capable of releasing chloride from 1,9-dichlorononane was obtained from isolates of soil bacteria with dehalogenating properties. A discussion of possible mechanisms for these reactions showed that several different processes are involved.
