Solid-state {sup 31}P NMR is used to study the stepwise amine intercalation of {alpha}-zirconium phosphate. This intercalation has several intermediates with different lattice spacings until a saturated phase with a protonated amine is reached. As amine loading increases, it replaces lattice water and goes from lying parallel to the phosphate layers to having the alkyl chain becoming more angled and upright. Adding water at low amine loadings suggests that there is an equilibrium of the various phases within the same layer of a single crystal. 15 refs., 10 figs.
