Ammonia, hydrazine, and a range of simple amines were intercalated into {alpha}-Zr(HPO{sub 4}){sub 2}{center dot}H{sub 2}O. The phases that formed have been characterized by X-ray diffraction and {sup 31}P MAS NMR studies. The position and intensity of the isotropic {sup 31}P resonances were found to depend on the type of amine present in the phase. {sup 31}P chemical shifts changed with deprotonation and with differences in the hydrogen-bonding environment about the acidic phosphate. With intercalation, linear alkyl chain primary amines produced downfield shifts of the phosphate groups while secondary and tertiary amines produced upfield shifts. Water content was also found to have an effect on the {sup 31}P chemical shifts.
