From joint meeting 1972 of the Deutsche Gesellschaft fuer Biophysik and the Deutsche Gesellschaft fuer Medizinische Physik; Erlangen, Germany (4 Oct 1972). When applying x-rays in diagnostics, the exposure of patients or the whole population should be as low as possible. There are different ways to reduce the exposure caused by diagnostic means. The most important ones are discussed and the influence of modern techniques concerning dosage is described. If several possibilities for the reduction of the x-ray exposure are not used, the dose rate could tend to surpass more than a hundred times the amount of the absolutely necessary dose. Special attention is given to the gonad dose. The contribution of the different diagnostic exposures to the gonads is described. It can be seen, however, that despite the growing number of diagnostic medical examinations the x-ray exposure is not bound to increase equally if the educational standard of the radiologists and the improvement of the techniques are continuously developed.
