Previous development activity suggested the dielectric stimulated arc concept could be used for a lightning arrestor connector. The proposed design, assembly procedures, and structural capabilities of the connector are described. Ten each lightning arrestor connectors using the titanium dioxide and aluminum oxide (anodize) dielectrics were assembled. Cleaning procedures, sealing materials and processes, and locating methods have been developed using currently available technology. Structural analysis indicates the connector body can withstand internal pressures to 340 atm; this exceeds the l80 atm maximum pressure predicted during 200,000 A lightning strikes. Calculations and hydrostatic pressure tests indicate that leakage of internal pressure starts at l40 atm at the encapsulant-pin interface. The design, assembly and test results included in this repont plus electrical and environmentat test results described in SC-DR-72 0307 meet the requirements proposed for the W66. 70 and 7l weapon systems.
