The intensity of ultraviolet fluoroscence of lymphocytes and neutrophils of dogs exposed to chronic gamma irradiation (at a dose rate of 0.06, 0.17, and 0.34 rads/day) was studied. The intensity of ultraviolet fluorescence increased gradually at doses of 0 to 70 rads. The intensity remained at a constant level that was significantly higher than the control at doses of 70 to 300 rads. The intensity decreased with a further increase of the dose. It is suggested that the decline of the fluorescence level of blood leukocytes is associated with the emergence in bone marrow of radioresistant cells producing leukocytes with a normal fluorescence intensity. This parameter was high at every dose tested (up to 740 rads) upon a combined effect of chronic irradiation (62 rad per year) and acute irradiation (42 rads three times a year). (auth)
