THE STILBENE SCINTILLATION CRYSTAL AS A NEUTRON SPECTROMETER

Technical Report ·
OSTI ID:4353618
One of the more efficient detectors which can be used as a neutron spectrometer (for neutron energies from 1 Mev to 20 Mev) is a single hydrogenous scintillator with associated photomultiplier tube and apparatus for pulseheight analysis. Neutrons entering such a scintillator produce recoil protons whose energies can be determined, in principle, from the observed pulse-height spectrum. The energy spectrum of the incident neutrons can then be determined from the energy spectrum of the protons. The elementary theory of this process is discussed in the following sections Various perturbing effects and background are considered in succeeding sections. Numerical data are presented in the form of tables and graphs for the particular case of stilbene, C/sub 14/H/sub 12/. (auth)
