CHANGES OF THE BLOOD IN CHRONIC RADIATION SICKNESS (in Russian)
The changes of peripheral blood and bone marrow were studied in 17 dogs beginning with the initial reactions and up to the lethal outcome. These dogs were irradiated by x rays for a number of years in the dose of 5 or 10 r. These investigations showed that reaction of the organism is manifested by alternation of the periods of increase of the symptoms of chronic radiation sickness with the periods of stabilization of the temporary compensation of the process. Sequence of development of the above periods, the time of survival of the animals, and other specific features in the development of this disease varied depending on the daily doses of irradiation (5 or 10 r) and individual characteristics of the organism. The results of the chronic radiation sickness were aplastic or hyperchromic macrocytic anemias and leukoses. There were no diseases or significant changes in the blood picture in the control group of animals, kept in the same conditions as the experimental animals. (tr-auth)
