Excitation functions at nine angles for the reaction N/sup 15/(p,4 alpha )C/sup 12/ are reported for incident proton energies from 0.9 to l.3 Mev. At a laboratory angle of l40 deg the excitation function has been extended to 2.9 Mev. In addition to previously reported resonances near 1.03 and l.2l Mev, corresponding to O/sup 16/ states at l3.08 and l3.24 Mev, an anomalous behavior is observed near l.87 Mev. Additional evidence for such behavior near this energy has been obtained from the N/sup 15/(p, alpha /sub 1 gamma /) C/sup 12/ reaction. The qualitative features of the N/sup 15/(p, alpha /sub 0/)C/sup 12/ data are shown to be consistent with the assignments J = 1/sup -/, J = l/sup -/, and J = 3/sup -/ for the 0.34, l.03, and 1.2l-Mev resonances, respectively. Fitting Breit-Wigner curves to the measured excitation function of (p, alpha /sub 1 gamma /)C/sup 12/ near l.64 and l.98 Mev has yielded E/sub R/== l.640 plus or minus 0.003Mev ( GAMMA =68 plus or minus 3 kev)and E =l.979 plus or minus 0.003 Mev (r = 23 plus or minus 2 kev) for these previously reported resonances (O/sup 16/ states at 13.65 and 13.97 Mev). It is shown that GAMMA /sub p/ GAMMA << 1 for the resonance at 1.98 Mev. (auth)
