AN INVESTIGATION OF THE C$sup 12$ + He$sup 3$ REACTIONS AT BOMBARDING ENERGIES BETWEEN 1.8 AND 5.4 Mev

Journal Article · · Nuclear Physics (Netherlands) Divided into Nucl. Phys. A and Nucl. Phys. B

The differential cross sections at several angles and some angular distributions of the following outgoing radiations induced by He/sup 3/ in C/sup 12/ targets from 1.8 to 5.4 Mev were measured; elastic He/sup 3/, proton groups corresponding to the formation of the N/sup 14/ ground state and excited states at 2.311, 3.945, 4.91, 5.10, 5.69, 5.83, 6.23, 8.44, and 7.03 Mev (p/sub 0/ to p/ sub 6/, p/sub 8/, p/sub 9/, and p/sub 11/), the 6.44 Mev gamm a rays ( gamma /sub 6.44/) following the p/sub 9/ group, and the alpha groups corresponding to the formation of the C/sup 11/ ground state and the first excited state at 2.00 Mev. Proton groups to N/sup 14/ states at 6.05 and 6.70 Mev (p/sub 7/ and p/sub 10/) were not observed. Both the p/sub 9/ and the corresponding gamma /sub 6.44/ show a strong isolated resonance at 2.990 plus or minus 0.010 Mev with GAMMA / sub lab/ = 125 plus or minus 10 kev. Analyses at this resonance on the elastic He/sup 3/, p/sub 9/, gamma /sub 6.44/, p/sub 1 / and n/sub 0/ data, assuming pure compound nucleus formation as the reaction mechanism, yielded J/sup pi / = 5/2/sup +/ for the corresponding state in O/sup 15*/ at 14.48 Mev and even parity for the 6.44 Mev state of the residual nucleus N/sup 14/. Indications of resonances at 2.45 plus or minus 0.04, 2.75 plus or minus 0.04, 3.28 plus or minus 0.04, 3.60 plus or minus 0.04, 4.20 pluiing to the states in O/sup 15/ at 14.03, 14.27, 14.69, 14.95, 15.43,
