SPECTROPHOTOMETRIC DETERMINATION OF ALUMINUM IN PLUTONIUM-ALUMINUM ALLOYS

Technical Report ·
DOI:https://doi.org/10.2172/4339286· OSTI ID:4339286
The method described involves the spectrophotometric determination of aluminum in plutoniumaluminum alloys following the separation of the excess plutonium and small amounts of iron from the aluminum by extraction of the cupferrate into chloroform. The aluminum concentration is determined on a Beckman Model DU spectrophotometer by measuring the optical density of the aluminum 8-hydroxyquinolate in chloroform at 385 millimicrons (m mu ). A correction is made for the small amount of plutonium which carries through the cupferron extraction and forms plutonium 6hydroxyquinolate along with aluminum. This is done by reading the optical density at 500 m mu and 650 m mu and using these values to correct the 385 m mu optical density reading. (auth)
