SPECTROPHOTOMETRIC DETERMINATION OF ZIRCONIUM AND HAFNIUM WITH OXINE AND THE APPLICATION TO THE ANALYSIS OF URANIUM (in Japanese)

Journal Article · · Bunseki Kagaku (Japan)

A fundamental study was made of the spectrophotometric method for the determination of microgram quantities of zirconium and hafnium using oxine. The determination is based on the extraction of their oxinates with chloroform and the spectrophotometric measurement of the extracts. There is not much difference between zirconium and hafnium in the optimum pH range for the extraction (pH 4.5 to 11.3), the wave length of maximum absorption (385 m mu ), molar absorbance index (1.4 x 10/sup 4/), and in the effects of several other substances. The method can be used for the determination of 3 to 60 mu g of zirconium and 6 to 120 mu g of hafnium. The established method was also applied to the separation and determination of zirconium in uranium. Extraction of uranium and aluminum is prevented by the use of acetate and a definite amount of fluoride ion (15 mg of fluoride ion for each 1 gram of uranium), respectively. In this condition, optimum pH range for zirconium extraction is 4.8 to 5.3. The extract is washed with a carbonatecyanide washing solution to remove copper and nickel. By measuring the absorbances of the extract at 385 and 470 m mu , zirconium and iron can be determined simultaneously. (auth)
