THE SPECTROPHOTOMETRIC DETERMINATION OF IRON AND ALUMINUM IN URANIUM

Journal Article · · Energia Nucl. (Milan)
OSTI ID:4155905
Rapid methods for the determination of iron and aluminum in trace and alloyimg levels im uranium are described. Uranium samples are dissolved im HCl and HNO/sub 3/. Iron is determined spectrophotometrically as the ferrous bathophenanthroline complex in am acetone-aqueous solution. Aluminum is determined spectrophotometrically after the chloroform extraction of its 8- hydroxyquinolate complex from a solution containing ammonium carbonate, mercaptoacetic acid, and potassium cyanide as complexing agents for the uranium and minor constituents in the samples. A comparison of data on the analysis of iron by bathophenanthroline and orthophenanthroline procedures is presemted. Data indicating thc accuracy amd precision of the methods are also presented.
