Thick-absorber line-shape analysis and interference effects in Moessbauer absorption spectra for the E2/M1 77.3-keV transition of $sup 197$Au

A dispersion term which is attributed to interference between internal converion following nuclear resonance absorption of gamma rays and the photoelectric effect has bean observed in /sup 197/Au Mossbauer absorption spectra measured as a function of Au-metal-absorbser thickness. From line-shape analysis which accounts for absorber thickness, the amplitude of the dispersion term is found to be xi = (-4.14 plus or minus 0.17) x 10/sup -3/ Neglect of the disperion term leads to an apparent thickness-dependent isomer shift, whereas inclusion of the dispersion term gives isomer shifts properly independent of thickness.
