STUDY OF THE NUCLEAR ZEEMAN EFFECT IN Au$sup 197$ (thesis)

Technical Report ·
OSTI ID:4719642
Mossbauer experiments were performed in external magnetic fields up to 86 kgauss with Pt/sup 197/ dissolved in Fe, Co, and Ni sources, and Au absorbers. The magnetic moment of the 77-kev isomeric state of Au/sup 197/ was measured as = +0.37 450 deg C in a 0.05 nm. The hyperfine fields at Au nuclei dissolved in Fe, hex. Co, cubic Co, and Ni were found to be -1420 450 deg C in a 220, - 980 450 deg C in a 150, -990 450 deg C in a 150, and -340 450 deg C in a 70 kgauss, respectively. The magnitude of the hyperfine field was found to be nearly proportional to the effective atomic magnetic moment of the host ferromagnetic material. Experiments were performed in an external magnetic field with sources of Pt/sup 197/ dissolved in Be and Pt in an attempt to measure directly; however, complicated behavior was magnetostriction was observed in ferromagnetic sources which makes sign determinations of internal fields in ferromagnets, using the Mossbauer effect, less straightforward than is usually assumed. 48 references.
