NATURAL RADIOACTIVITY OF V$sup 50$ AND Ta$sup 18$$sup 0$

Journal Article · · Physical Review (U.S.) Superseded in part by Phys. Rev. A, Phys. Rev. B: Solid State, Phys. Rev. C, and Phys. Rev. D
The methods of proportional counter and scintillation spectroscopy have been used to examine thc possible radioactivity of the naturally occurring nuclides V/sup 50/ and Ta/sup 180/. Some positive evidence is obtained that V/ sup 50/ decays by K capture to the 1.58-Mev excited state of Ti/sup 50/ with a half life of (4.8 plus or minus 1.2) x 10/sup 14/yr. A search for titanium K x rays gave negative results. For Ta/sup 180/ a lower limit of (2.3 plus or minus O.7) x 10/sup 13/ years was found for the half life against decay by K capture and a lower limit of (1.7 plus or minus O.6) x 10/sup 13/ years against beta decay.
