Electrostatic instabilities in a hot-electron plasma

Oscillations in a cold plasma which contains a small group of hot electrons are studied in the frequency region below the electron-cyclotron frequency. If the hot electron velocity distribution function is anisotropic, Alfven waves and fast magnetoacoustic waves and whistlers are aperiodically unstable for a hot electron pressure of the order of the magnetic pressure. The instability conditions and growth rate are determined. (auth)
