Electromagnetic instabilities in a finite-$beta$ plasma with hot electrons

The effect of a loss cone and the presence of a small group of cold electrons on the stability of a uniform anisotropic finite- BETA plasma containing hot electrons is studied. The loss cone attenuates the firehose instability and enhances the mirror instability; it also leads to the appearance of pure loss-cone instability. The instabilities are electromagnetic waves which correspond in an isotropic plasma to an Alfven wave (unmagnetized ion sound), to a fast magnetoacoustic wave (whistler), and to a slow magnetoacoustic wave (magnetized ion sound). The presence of a small group of cold electrons can change the spectrum and the stability conditions. (auth)
