Electromagnetic instabilities of finite-pressure anisotropic plasma with hot electrons

Journal Article · · Plasma Phys., v. 15, no. 7, pp. 627-634
ABS>Instabilities of finite-pressure plasma with hot electrons and cold ions are considered, the instabilities being driven by the electron-pressure anisotropy in the presence of the loss cone. The electromagnetic waves, which correspond in isotropic plasma to whistler and ion acoustic waves (fast magnetosonic wave and slow ordinary wave), appear to be unstable. These instabilities are aperiodic and their growth rates are considerably higher than the ion-cyclotron frequency and considerably below the electron cyclotron frequency. (auth)
