Effect of dried thyroid gland pretreatment upon erythropoietic activity and development of anaemia in sublethally x-irradiated mice

The possibility of a favorable effect of thyroid hormone pretreatment on postirradiation recovery of erythropoiesis was tested in mice, using /sup 59/Fe uptake, newly formed erythrocyte release and red blood cell count as criteria. The results show that 21-day peroral administration of dried thyroid gland in a dose of 0.6 mg. per 100 g. diet stimulated erythropoiesis, in particular, extramedullary, and led to an increase in erythrocyte count in peripheral blood. Postirradiation erythropoietic recovery of mice exposed to a whole-body dose of 450R was markedly stimulated by thyroid gland pretreatment. This favorable effect was reflected also in a milder degree of postirradiation anemia. The effect can be explained by persisting higher level of red blood cell count and by activation of erythropoiesis in auxiliary bloodforming organs. (auth)
