PHOTONEUTRON REACTIONS IN LITHIUM

The photoneutron cross section for the ( gamma ,n) reaction in natural lithium was measured and found to have its maximum at 16.8 Mev, a peak value of 2.3 mb, and a width at half maximum of 9.3 Mev. Fine structure in the region to 10 Mev was resolved as follows: Li/sup 6/( gamma ,np)He/sup 4/ threshold at 3.61 plus or minus 0.15 Mev, Li/sup 6/( gamma ,p)He/sup 5/ threshold at 4.64 plus or minus 0.08 Mev, a level in Li/sup 6/ rt 5.24 plus or minus 0.05 Mev, Li/sup 6/ ( gamma ,n)Li/sup 5/ threshold at 5.73 plus or minus 0.05 Mev, Li/sup 7/( gamma ,n)Li/sup threshold at 7.30 plus or minus 0.04 Mev, and a level in Li/sup 7/ at 9.66 plus or minus 0.04 Mev.
