THERMAL EXPANSION OF ZIRCALOY-2 BETWEEN ROOM TEMPERATURE AND 1000 C

Technical Report ·
OSTI ID:4324015
Thermal expansivities for 25% cold-rolled and annealed Zircaloy-2 were determined in the three principle directions of rolling. It was found that the thermal expansion between 30 deg C (86DEF) and 600 deg C (1112 deg F) could be expressed by the equation: L/sub T/ = L/sub O/ STA0.99983 + 5.628 x 10/sup -6/ T + 1.581 x 10/sup -9/ T/sup 2/!. The start of a transformation on heating, assumed to be the alpha yields BETA reaction, was found to be 827 plus or minus 7 deg C(1521 plus or minus 12 deg F) and was completed at 985 plus or minus 5 deg C(1805 plus or minus 9 deg F). No anisotropic effect on the coefficients of expansion was found. This is perhaps due to departure from the recrystallization tex tures established for heavily cold-reduced zirconium, although experimental error may have masked small differences. (auth)
