THERMAL EXPANSION OF HAFNIUM CARBIDE

Journal Article · · Journal of the American Ceramic Society (U.S.)

The thermal expansion of HfC was measured with a Gaertner dilatation interferometer calibrated to an accuracy of plus or minus 1 deg F. Each run involved heating the test cones at about the rate of 8 deg F per minute to the desired test temperature and then cooling at the same rate. Density variation in the high-density range appeared to have no effect on the thermal expansion. The coefficient of thermal expansion was calculated to be 3.66 plus or minus 0.02 x 10/sup -6/ per deg F from 77 to 1133 deg F or 6.59 plus or minus 0.04 x 10/sup -6/per deg C from 25to 612 deg C.
