A TOROIDAL BETA-SPECTROMETER FOR STUDYING THE CONVERSION RADIATION ACCOMPANYING ALPHA-DECAY

An iron-less spectrometer for alpha-electron coincidences with spatial focusing of electrons is described. The instrument has a resolution of about 1% and an illumination of 7%. It can be used to study conversion lines with intensities of the order of 10/sup -4/ electrons per alpha decay. A special fast-slow'' coincidence scheme is used to count the number of alpha-electron coincidences. Trial experiments were made using the L/sub III/ conversion line from the 43.5-kev gamma line of Pu/sup 238/ with an electron energy of 26.3 kev. The L/sub II/ and L/sub III/ conversion lines of the 100-kev gamma radiation from Pu/sup 238/ were measured. (J.S.R.)
