Effect of environment in the irradiation of DNA with fast electrons of different energy spectra

From annual meeting of the Deutsche Gesellschaft fuer Biophysik; Juelich, Germany (27 Sep 1973). The effect of oxygen, nitrogen, air as well as 0.4 m NaCl on the change of uv absorption in the irradiation of DNA with fast electrons was investigated. In all cases examined, the Na ions have a protecting effect. In the presence of Na ions, O/sub 2/ has a protecting effect; in the absence of Na ions, on the other hand, O/sub 2/ has a sensitizing effect. Deep irradiation showed a more marked change of uv absorption only in the presence of oxygen and absence of Na/sup +/, and a lesser change of the uv absorption in the presence of Na/sup +/, compared with surface irradiation.
