EFFECTS OF X-IRRADIATION ON LIPID METABOLISM. IV. LIPOGENESIS FROM ACETATE- C$sup 14$ BY THE LIVER

Rats, mice, and guinea pigs were subjected to whole body x-irradiation and the uptake of C/sub 14/ from acetate-C/sup 14/ into liver lipids and exhaled CO/sub 2/ was determined. The conversion of acetate-C/sup 14/ to lipid C/sup 14/ in liver slices prepared 24 hours nfter irradiation was increased as much as 20 fold in rats, 2 fold in guinea pigs, and not at all in mice. The changes noted were roughly correlated with the levels of liver glycogen. The data offer a possible explanation for the previously observed increases in blood lipid levels following x-irradiation.
