SOME RECENT STUDIES WITH HEXAFLUORIDES

Technical Report ·
OSTI ID:4317969
A method of preparation for NpF/sub 6/ in gram quantities is described and the results of studies with this compound as well as recent work with UF/sub 6/ and PuF/sub 6/ are . presented. The physical properties of these three compounds is behave in an anomalous fashion; a thermodynamic basis to explain this behavior is given. Preceding the 5f transiton series hexafluorides is another group of hexafluorides formed by the 5d transition series elements, W, Re, Os, Ir, and Pt. The preparation and study of OsF/sub 6/ is reported this is of particular interest since this compound has been shown to be identical with the previously reported OsP/sub 8/. An octafluoride has never been prepared and the compound previously reported as OsF/sub 6/ was also incorrectly identified. The first preparation of a hexavalent compound of platinum, PtF/sub 6, is also described as well as some of its properties. This compound appears to be the most reactive and unstable of all the hexafluorides. (auth)
