FISSION PRODUCT PILOT PLANT AND OTHER DEVELOPMENTS IN THE RADIOISOTOPE PROGRAM AT THE OAK RIDGE NATIONAL LABORATORY

Technical Report ·
OSTI ID:4317416
A survey is given of the plant and process improvements incorporated into the program from 1955 until the present time, A major addition to the production capacity of seperated long-lived fission products was made by the completion of the Fission Product Plot Plant, which has a designed annual capacity of 200,000 curies of Cs/sup 137/. Comparable amounts of the other fission products, Sr/sup 90/, Ru/sup 106/, Ce/sup 144/, Pm/sup 147/, and Tc/sup 99/, wil l also be separated from aqueous wastes resulting from irradiated uranium recovery processcs, Short-lived fission product production has been increased by the addition of equipment in which Zr/sup 95/-Nb/sup 95/, Ba/sup 140/ , Nd/sup 147/, Pr/sup 143/, Sr/sup 89/, Ce/sup 141/, and Ru/sup 103/ are recovered from the uranium solution remaining after the distillation of I/sup 131/ . Other short-lived radioisotopes with half-lives as short as 12.44 hours are produced by processing irradiated material. The radioactive noble gases, Xe/sup 133/ and Kr/sup 85/ have also been made available in greater quantities by the use of imporved equipment. In general, radioisotope production has grown from 30,000 curies per year in 1955 to over 120,000 curies at the present time, and in the same period the average shipment has increased from 2,000 to 10,000 mc.
