Title: Personnel radiation exposure aspects of operation, maintenance, and refueling a boiling water reactor

Conference ·
OSTI ID:4315569

From third Health Physics Society midyear topical symposium; Los Angeles, California, USA (29 Jan 1969). See CONF-690103P1. The Big Rock Point Nuclear Plant is described and dose distributions are discussed with regard to occupational group, plant history, and specific maintenance items. A table is presented to show rem gamma, average rem per man, and % of total rem for operators, outside maintenance personnel, plant maintenance personnel, technicians, and supervisory personnel. The plant maintenance crew received an average of 26 rem each over their 6-yr plant exposure history. Dose distribution with respect to off-gas activity is discussed. The data show that exposures to radiation have been high. The greatest single cause of exposure to ionizing radiation was a result of fuel failures. Exposures can be reduced substantially by proper equipment design including the ease of maintenance as well as proper location of the equipment. (HLW)
