The lattice constants of nonstoichiometric ThC (C/Th = 1.2, 1.1, directly using high temperature x-ray diffractometer from room temperature to 1100 deg C. It was found that the homogeneity range of ThC phase is C/Th = 0.65 to 0.68 and up to 1.0 at room temperature, whereas the range does not change at temperature up to 1050 deg C. The thermal expansion coefficients of ThC decrease with the increase of C/Th in the phase of ThC. At C/Th is above 1.0 and below 0.65 to 0.66, the thermal expansion coefficients are constant. respectively. The thermal expansion coefficients of C/Th = 0.76 vary in the temperature range 700 to 800 deg C. These values are 7.1 x 10/sup -6//deg and 8.5 x 10/sup -6//deg in the low and high temperature range, respectively. (auth)
