The dependence of the Si/sup 31/ formation cross section on the energy of the bombarding protons at 120 to 660 Mev was studied. The diagram of silicon decay demonstrates a component with T = 2.6 to 2.7 hr. Measurements of silicon BETA particle absorption in aluminum showed an energy value of 1.47 Mev which is in good agreement with the available data for Si/sup 31/ and proves the radiochemical purity of the silicon. Calculations show the cross sections for Si/ sup 31/ formation do not vary with 120 to 220 Mev protons but increase considerably with proton energies from 220 to 680 Mev. In the reaction the energy of the incident proton is spent on the formation of the pi /sup +/ meson and its kinetic energy. Thus, it is evident that the Si/sup 30/(p, pi )Si/sup 31/ cross section permits evaluation of the yield of maximum energy pi mesons in proton interactions with silicon nuclei. Radiochemical attempts to uncover (p, pi /sup +/) reaction for heavier nuclei of Ge and Bi were not successful. (R.V.J.)
