A test is made of the factorization scheme proposed by Miettinen for the inclusive reactions pi /sup plus or minus /p yields LAMBDA + X at 18.5 GeV/ c and K/sup -/ p yields LAMBDA + X at 14.3 GeV/c. The test is applied to the lambda differential cross section and polarization via a sum rule derived within the concepts of duality and exchange degeneracy, and SU/sub 3/. The original scheme is found not to agree with the experimental data. A possible explaration of the disagreement is discussed. (auth)
