CROSS-SECTIONS FOR (n,p) AND (n,$alpha$) REACTIONS OF MAGNESIUM WITH 14.8 Mev NEUTRONS A NEW ISOTOPE Na$sup 2$$sup 6$

Journal Article · · Nuclear Phys.
> Irradiation of natural magnesium metal or highly enriched Mg/sup 26/O with 14.8 Mev neutrons gives rise to a new activity with a half-life of 1.04 plus or minus 0.03 s which is assigned to Na/sup 26/ from the Mg/sup 26/(n,p) reaction. The decay appears to proceed mainly by high energy (>5 Mev) BETA particles. The reaction cross-section is 50 plus or minus 5 mb, based on a value of 89 mb for the O/sup 16/(n,p)N/sup 16/ reaction at 14.8 Mev. Simultaneously, the Mg/sup 26/(n, alpha ) reaction produces well-known Ne/sup 23/ with a cross-section of 89 plus or minus 5 mb, based on the O/sup 16/(n,p) yield. A new measurement of the Ne/sup 23/ half-life gives a value of 38.0 plus or minus 0.3 s. The cross-section for the Mg/sup 25/(n,p)Na/sup 25/ reaction is 60 plus or minus 10 mb based on the O/sup 16/(n,p) reaction. (auth)
