Study of Neutron Absorptiometry and Its Application to Determination of Boron
- Northwestern Univ., Evanston, IL (United States). Dept. of Chemistry
A systematic study of the practical and theoretical aspects of neutron absorptiometry has shown that it possesses many advantages for the determination of elements, such as boron, which have high neutron absorption cross sections. The optimum geometrical arrangement of neutron source, neutron moderator, sample, and neutron detector has been found. Precise determinations of boron can be carried out in a few minutes with relatively small, safe, and inexpensive neutron sources. The method is nondestructive, the state of chemical combination is immaterial, and there are few interferences. Ultimately, the most serious disadvantages are low sensitivity and the requirement for relatively large samples for highest precision.
