EFFECT OF VARIOUS FACTORS ON PROCESSES OF BIOLOGICAL SYNTHESIS OF THYROXINE IN THYROID

Technical Report ·
OSTI ID:4292050
A comparative study was made of various factors which are known to change the functional activity of the thyroid gland and to affect the mechanism of thyroxine formation. Factors investigated include iodides, methyl-thiouracil, thyroxine, thyrotropic hormone, and hypophysectomy, as well as drugs which intensify the processes of excitation or enhance inhibitory processes in the central nervous system which affect the biosynthesis of thyroxine. An effort was made to find the mechanism controlling hormone formation. Test procedures included determinations of the uptake of radioactive iodine, the speed of thyroxine formation, and the activity of proteolytic enzymes of the thyroid gland. Data are tabulated, and conclusions are discussed. (C.H.)
