An account is given of the photomultiplier tube considered as a component of a scintillation counter. Possible compromises among the disposable parameters are indicated to obtain the best performance for particular task. The required characteristics are explained which may be correlated with data obtained by methods of test not directiy related to scintillation counter techniques. (W.D.M.)
