Preparation of Tetrafluoride of Uranium from UO$sub 3$ or Uranyl Salts; PREPARATION DE TETRAFLUORURE D'UR

Technical Report ·
OSTI ID:4285550

The results obtained in the investigations on the simultaneous reduction and fluorination of UO/sub 3/, U/sub 3/O/sub 8/, uranyl fluoride, ammonium diuranate, and uranyl oxalate are presented. Hydrazine fluoride and ammonium bifluoride were used as the reducing and fluorination agents. The reagents are mixed with the powdered uranium compounds and heated in a nitrogen atmosphere at 100 to 200 deg C. The reaction products are collected and decomposed either under vacuum or in a nitrogen atmosphere. The mechanism of the reduction of uranium was not estsblished with any certainty, but the minimum quantity of hydrazine fluoride necessary for complete reduction was 0.7 mole/g-atom of uranium. The UF/sub 4/ obtained is very pure, a minimum of 99.5%. It is very reactive. (J.S.R.)
