Studies on the preparation of pure uranium tetrafluoride from crude sodium diuranate

Technical Report ·
OSTI ID:4268988

Crude sodium diuranate is converted to crude uranyl nitrate, the pH of the solution is adjusted to < 3.0, and ammonium fluoride is added. The precipitated insoluble fluorides are filtered off, and the filtrate containing the complex fluorides of uranium and iron is treated with hydrogen peroxide and the pH adjusted to 6.5 to 7.0. At this pH the iron remains in solution. The precipitated ammonium uranium peroxyfluoride is filtered, washed, dried, and heated in a current of Freon-12 at 450 to 500 deg C to give uranium tetrafluoride. The preparation of the peroxy complex, the optimum conditions for the reaction between the peroxy complex and freon-12, and the nature and purity of the uranium tetrafluoride formed are described.
