Instead of preparing uranium fluorides with HF, the inventor uses hydrazine bifluoride and ammonium bifluoride with hexavalent uranium compounds such as UO/sub 3/,U/sub 3/O/sub 8/, UO/sub 2/F/sub 2/, or U/sub 2/O/sub 7/(NH/sub 4/)/sub 2/. The mixture is heated to 140 deg C, and the reaction produces a reduction as well as a fluoridation. The complex obtained, UF/sub 4/NH/sub 4/, decomposes at 300 to 500 deg C into UF/sub 4/ and NH/sub 4/F with a yield better than 99%. (EURATOM)
