THE ROLE OF IMPURITIES AND THE RADIUS EFFECT IN THE BF$sub 3$ PROPORTIONAL COUNTERS

Technical Report ·
OSTI ID:4283428

The influence of impurities on the characteristics of proportional BF/ sub 3/ counters was studied. Especially the contamination with SiF/sub 4/ was investigated, and the results obtained were compared with the characteristics of the counters filled with BF/sub 3/ gas, highly purified by thermodiffusion processing. In the study of the properlies of proportional Bf/sub 3/ counters, pulse amplitudes and counting rates as functions of the spatial distribution of the primary ionization were examined. The results were compared with corresponding Ar and Ar + C/sub 2/H/sub 5/OH proportional counters. Some hypotheses and conclusions about the discharge process are proposed, taking into consideration the radius effect'' and electron capture. The measurements were performed using end window B F/sub 3/ proportional counters and a carefully collimated Po alpha source. (auth)
