EFFECT OF GASEOUS IMPURITIES IN BF$sub 3$ PROPORTIONAL COUNTERS

Technical Report ·
OSTI ID:4274198
The effects which SiF/sub 4/, SO/sub 2/, and SF/sub 6/ have on the plateau and pulse-size distribution of a proportional counter were investigated. SiF/sub 4/ was tested at 30, 45, and 60 cm Hg of BF/sub 3/. Its effect was found to be independent of the counter pressure fur the range of values considered. From the variation in the plateau, the attachment probability for SiF/sub 4/ was calculated to be h = 1.458 x 10/sup -5/ and its cross section for attachment to be sigma /sub a/ = 5.12 x 10/sup -20/ cm. The permissible amount of these gases without the counter being affected beyond the limits of tolerance which are set up were found to be 0.04% for SiF/sub 4/, 0.01% for SO/sub 2/, and 2.0 x 10/sup - 6%/ for SF/sub 6/.
