RESEARCH ON BF$sub 3$ PROPORTIONAL COUNTERS (in German)

Journal Article · · Kernenergie (East Germany)
OSTI ID:4138699

Results are given from research on BF/sub 3/ proportional counters conducted in the course of industrial development. From measurements of the pulse-height distribution for the reaction B/sup 10/(n, alpha )Li/sup 7/, the probability for the process in the ground state of Li/sup 7/ was found to be 6.51 plus or minus 0.5%. The effects of gamma nays on the counting-tube plateau and the maximum permissible gamma dose as a function filling pressure are given. Measurement errors due to radiation from A and Cu counting tubes, which are activated to saturation in a flux of 5 x 10/sup 6/ neutrons/cm/sup 2//sec, can be kept at a negligible minimum by suitably low working potentials. For storage periods up to 20 months after BF/sub 3/ filling, the copper counting tube shows no change in characteristics. The plateau disturbances dependent on BF/sub 3/ pressure are clearly evident after 18 months storage for glass counting tubes with gnaphite cathodes. The lifetime L is dependent on the gas simplification M, and can be described by the relation L ? 5 x l0/sup 12//M. A method for determining the gas amplification is given. (tr-auth)
