Lu/sup 171/ was separated from the rare earth elements obtained in tantalum targets bombarded by fast protons. The basic activity of the preparation was Lu/sup 169/ and Lu/sup 170/ The Lu/sup 169/ isotope decays into Yb/sup 169/ which, within a 30-day period, decays into Tm/sup 169/. The half- life period of Lu/sup 169/ and Lu/sup 170/ is about 2 days. After a month, the lutetium was chromatographically purified from Yb. The preparation contained only Lu with an 8-day decay period. The gamma spectrum of the preparation was studied with a scintillation spectrometer. (R.V.J.)
