An improved n-He/sup 3/ coincidence apparatus was used to measure the effective cross sections of the K/sup 39/(n,p)Ar/sup 39/ and K/sup 39/(n, alpha )Cl/sup 36/ reactions at a neutron energy of 2.59 Mev. The values obtained were 45 mb and 36 mb, respectively, with an error of plus or minus 10%. A comparison with the effective cross sections calculated approximately from the continuum therory yielded an effective nuclear radius of R = 3.65 x 10/sup -13/ cm for Ar/sup 39/ and R = 7.27 x 10/sup -13/ cm for Cl/sup 36/.
