The Effect of Desoxyribonucleotides on the Hemopoietic Tissue of Irradiated Mammals; DEISTVIE DEZOKSIRIBONUKLEOTIDOV NA KROVETVORNUYU TKAN OBLUCHENNYKH ZHIVOTNYKH
The injection of bone marrow or spleen cells into irradiated animals results in a recovery of hemopoiesis. The presence of desoxyribonucleotides was suggested as possible stimulants in this effect. The material to be tested was added to a suspension of bone marrow from irradiated guinea pigs and its ability to cause a restoration of radiation-inhibited DNA synthesis was followed. A chick embryo extract and its nucleotide-containing fraction had a marked positive effect. The effectiveness of ribonucleotides or of ATP was not significant. At the same time these experiments showed that the irradiated marrow had an increased capacity to dephosphorylate the desoxycytidylic acid to cytosindesoxyriboside. Irradiated mice were treated with desoxyribonucleotides. The survival and the hematologic recovery in the peripheral blood were followed. The effect on survival was dependent on the dose of the nucleotide and on the interval between irradiation and injection. The fall of the red cell count was lowered and its recovery was moderately hastened. (J.S.R.)
