Studies were made of boron terbium compounds (of two possible configurations 4f/sup 8/5d'6s or 4f/sup 9/6s/sup 2/) prepared by terbium oxide reduction by boron carbide and by boron: Tb/sub 2/O/sub 3/ + 3B/sub 4/C = 2TbB/ sub 6/ + 3CO; Tb/sub 2/O/sub 3/ + 15B 2TbB6 + 3BO. In both cases the reduction lasted an hour at 1650 C. The boron-reduced preparation was blue, while the boron carbide-reduced material was grey-brown; the first product was the terbium hexaboride with lattice space a - 4.11 A, and the second was tetraboride with a tetragonal lattice a = 7.13 A, c = 4.07 A. The results verified the existence of TbB/sub 4/ and TbB/sub 6/. Results of x-ray studies are tabulated. (R.V.J.)
