The low-energy level structure of Tb/sup 3 +/ has been derived from spectra obtained with a sliding spark light source. The /sup 7/F ground term of the 4f/sup 8/ configuration was found as well as all levels of the configurations 4f/sup 7/5d, 6s, and 6p built on the /sup 8/S/sub 7///sub 2/ core state of 4f/sup 7/. Of the possible 51 lines connecting these levels, 48 were observed. Optimized radial parameters are given for the observed configurations. A value for the ionization energy of 39.37(0.10) eV is derived for Tb/sup 3 +/. (AIP)
