THE BORIDES OF PRASEODYMIUM ERBIUM, AND TERBIUM

Journal Article · · Soviet Phys.-Cryst.
OSTI ID:4160615
The borides of erbium, praseodymium, and terbium were prepared by reducing the oxides with boron and boron carbide in vacuo at 1500 to 2000 deg C. The B/sub 4/C method produced PrB/sub 6/ oniy and gave the result a= 4.12 A. The boron method gave a tetragonal ErB/sub 4/(UB/sub 4/ structure) with a = 7.08 A and c = 4.02 A for firing at 1600 to 2000 deg F. An intense blue color was deposited at 1800 deg C in the cooler parts of the furnace; the color is typical of rare-earth hexaborides. Both methods were used to make TbB/sub 6/ at 1650 deg C. Results show a = 4.11 A, in agreement with those for other rareearth hexaborides. The B/sub 4/C method gave a grey-brown product of TbB/sub 4/ with a = 7.15 and c = 4.07 A. (B.O.G.)
