The existence of hexaborides DyB/sub 6/, HoB/sub 6/, and LuB/sub 6/ and tetraborides DyB/sub 4/, HoB/sub 4/, and ErB/sub 4/ was establisbed and that of the hexaborides of Gd and Er and of the tetraboride of Gd verlfied. On the example of lanthanum and cerium it was shown that the hexaborides are apparently the highest berides of the rare earth elements. The bend lengths of Me--Mc, Me-- B, and B--B were calculatwd. An examination of the ratio of the sum of atomic radii to these values depending upon the atomic numbers of the metals showed that in CaB, BaB/sub 6/, SrB/sub 6/, in the hexabromides of the other rare earth metals the latter are trivalent.
