ELECTRON REQUIREMENTS OF BONDS IN METAL BORIDES

Technical Report ·
OSTI ID:4701701
Electrical measurements were made on CaB/sub 6/, SrB/sub 6/, BaB/sub 6/, YB/sub 2/, YB/sub 4/, YB/sub 6/, and YB/sub 12/ for the purpose of t esting models of the electronic structure of the boron atoms in the four boride types represerted. The compounds CaB/sub 6/, SrB/sub 6/, and BaB/sub 6/ were found to be semiconductors. The Hall coefficierts of YB/sub 2/, YB/sub 6/, and YB/sub 12/ were measured and found to correspond to one free electron per yttrium atom in each compound. The Hall coefficiert of YB/sub 4/ was also measured, but could not be interpreted because the free electron theory does not provide a theoretical value for comparison with experiment. The results are in agreement with the models proposed. (auth)
